The Black Nazarene is a wooden statue of Jesus Christ carrying the cross. It is known for its dark color because of the smoke and wax buildup from centuries of being carried through the streets during processions. It is also believed to have been burnt during a fire in the 1760s, which added to its dark color.
The image was brought to the Philippines from Mexico in 1606 by Augustine Recollect missionaries. Today, the Black Nazarene is enshrined in the Quiapo Church in Manila, where it attracts millions of devotees every year.
The image is considered a symbol of hope and perseverance for Filipinos, who believe that praying to the Black Nazarene can help them overcome their struggles and achieve their goals. Devotees often participate in the annual Traslacion procession, where they try to touch or kiss the statue as a sign of their faith and devotion.
